Friendship Day and American Family Day fall on the same day of the month. Have a luau block party and invite the neighbors and your family  for some cool summer fun. (It could also be a good time to start a Neighborhood Watch Group in your neighborhood. )

August 18th International Homeless Animals Day

Organizations around the world come together on the third Saturday of August to raise awareness about the pet overpopulation problem.

August 18th is International Homeless Animals’ Day : activities often include candlelight vigils, adopt-a-thons, microchip clinics, blessings of the animals, and heartfelt speeches given by council members, local veterinarians, humane officers and shelter personnel. Other activities include slideshows, rallies, dog walks, open houses, award ceremonies, live music, raffles, and games
.

Be a part of the solution by volunteering or donating to your local shelter.

Here's very cool way to help homeless pets and our wounded warriors!

Happy Birthday Sparky the Fire Dog

Sparky the Fire Dog
Official mascot of the National Fire Protection Association

Here's a poem I think Sparky made up

The dogs once held a meeting,

They came from near and far,
Some came by Greyhound busses
While others came by car.

Before they stepped inside the hall,
and allowed to take a look,
They had to take their rear ends off,
And hang them on a hook.

They all walked in, one by one,
Each Mother, Son and Sire,
But no sooner were they seated,
When someone hollered "fire!"

Up they jumped and out they ran,
but  had no time to look,
So each just grabbed a rear end,
Right off the rear end hook.

They got their rear ends all mixed up,
It made them awful sore,
To think they'd lost the rear end,
They'd always worn before.

And that's the reason why, you see,
On any city street,
A dog will stop and swap a smell,
With every dog he meets.

And that's the reason why a dog
will leave his nice fat, juicy, bone,

To smell another rear end,
In hopes to find his own.....

Happy International Women's Day

3 Ways to Celebrate International Women's Day

Poor people lead incredibly complicated financial lives. They have to make ends meet on an average income of $2 a day, which barely covers their basic needs. To manage their unpredictable situations, they need access to funds and financial tools that traditional banks aren’t willing to provide.

Poor women in particular, are often denied bank loans and deemed unbankable. Fortunately, through microfinance projects, entrepreneurial women can connect into a huge pool of untapped investment funds that such projects strive to make available to the working poor.

1 One such micro-lender, MicroPlace enables you to make investments in the fight against worldwide poverty -- a $300 billion problem. While daunting, raising and effectively distributing that kind of capital to the people who need it is indeed possible.

2 Join the FITE against poverty and oppression. Financial Independence Through Entreprenuership, believes that when a woman develops her own sustainable business, not only does she improve her own situation – but her entire community benefits through a multiplier effect of change.

3 KIVA, in turn, represents a source of funding for variety of microfinance projects, housing loans, agricultural loans, and manufacturing loans, enabling women to invest in their growth.

It might be hard to imagine how so little can do so much good in the world, but it can. Sometimes, it only takes a few hundred dollars from several investors to help a borrower purchase supplies at a better wholesale price, resulting in higher profits. Or better yet, a new piece of equipment, such as a sewing machine, to double her output.

Literally, the cost of a cup of coffee per day could change a woman's life from starving to thriving. That's how we can help our sisters.
